The
Mt. Washington Bed and Breakfast is a seven guest room,
family owned bed and breakfast. The Federal style farmhouse was
built in the mid 1800's and was bought by Harvey and Susannah
Philbrook in 1853. The Philbrook's owned the B & B until 1929
when it was sold to the Tanner Family. The Tanner's ran the B
& B as "The Androscoggin Inn" until 1984. The current owners,
the Mayers, purchased the B & B in 1999 and have been running
the Mt. Washington Bed & Breakfast since then.
The Bed
& Breakfast is reported to have been part of the Underground Railroad.
The B & B sits on a hill overlooking the Androscoggin River and
Reflection Pond and is located in the Androscoggin River Valley.
In the spring, or after significant rainfall you can also see
Giant Falls as it tumbles over the Mahoosic
Range in Shelburne.
As you relax on our porch, you can gaze at Mount
Washington - on a clear day you can see the Observatory's
towers and the smoke from the Cog
Railway as it makes its way to the highest peak in the Northeast
(6288 feet!).
We are
one of the closest Bed and Breakfasts to the Mt.
Washington Auto Road, Wildcat
Mountain, and the AMC Pinkham Notch Visitor's Center where
many of the hikes to the top of Mt. Washington begin.
Start
your day with a full breakfast prepared by Mary Ann. You
awaken to the aroma of freshly brewed coffee. When
you walk into the Hummingbird Dining Room
you seat yourself at a table set with orange juice and fresh fruit.
What
will breakfast be today? Stuffed Cinnamon French Toast, Lemon
Raspberry Pancakes, Baked Eggs Italiano, Banana Nut Pancakes,
Apple Fritter French Toast, or one of Mary Ann's other specialties?
Breakfast is served "Innkeeper's
Choice" style using organic and locally grown products when
available. With your entrée you have a choice of a variety of
breakfast meat - including vegetarian. Every day Mary Ann prepares
something different - seconds are always available! If you have
special dietary needs please tell us at reservation. Always available
are a variety of cereals, Mt. Washington homemade granola and
eggs. While eating breakfast you may be visited by one of the
hummingbirds that come for our homemade nectar.
The
Mt. Washington Bed & Breakfast offers a quiet, relaxing
atmosphere. Come be pampered at this award winning B & B. After
breakfast, you can choose to curl up on the sofa in our sitting
room to read a book or sit on the porch and bird watch. Will you
catch a glimpse of one of the Bald Eagles or Osprey who hunt the
Androscoggin River? If you choose an active day you can: hike,
bike, swim, canoe, kayak, fish, fly fish, golf, rent an atv, downhill
ski, cross country ski, go for a dog sled ride, snowshoe, ice
climb, sightsee, go antiquing, go on a moose tour, bird watch,
go for a self-guided waterfall tour, rent a snowmobile, build
a snowman, visit the outlets or visit the many attractions
in the area.
In the
afternoon you return to find home baked goodies such as "Auntie
May's" oatmeal spice cookies, brownies, pumpkin spice cookies,
raspberry bars, or pumpkin bars. Beverages are always available.
